DSM New York

Youths in Balaclava is a brand new undertaking by Dover Street Market, the first chapter of which is the launch on January 13th of a photo documentary book by photographer Ryan O’Toole Collett.

When sending Ryan to Singapore last July to document the opening of the latest DSM there, we asked him, in his spare time, to look out for another side of Singapore, different to its classic image of a beautiful tropical efficient if somewhat too clean and regulated city state.

What Ryan found were a group of friends who called themselves the Youths in Balaclava, a collection of like-minded people interested in exploring a different perspective towards street culture in all its myriad forms: music, art and fashion. They had made some collections with names likes Traitors 2 Society, Twisted Paradise and Stigma. Some are trained fashion designers, some are musicians, one is a scientist, one an accountant, and one is even doing his military service. They say “being a collective group, our clothes not only promote a sense of style with a hint of rebellion, but also speaks of a lifestyle that encourages one to embrace individuality”.

Excerpts from a manifesto:

…FOR THE PEOPLE OF YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE
BEAUTIFUL IDEALISM OF A YOUNG RADICAL
SAGE WISDOM OF AN ELDER
INSPIRED BY ALL THE REJECTS OF EVERY ERA
SONGS OF THE DROPOUTS
ART OF THE MISFITS
A RECONSTRUCTED SOCIAL CONSTRUCT…
